Discovering Vinho Verde With AnD Wines

I discovered A&D Wines at the latest event of Wines of Portugal in Montreal. I had the chance of meeting Afonso Palma Nogueira, Export Manager at A&D Wines, for tastings and food pairings at some of Montreal’s best portuguese restaurants.

About AnD

Established in 2005 by Alexandre Gomes and his wife Dialina Azevedo, A&D Wines is a 98 acres estate winery located in the south of Baião in the Vinho Verde region. The estate is composed of three main organically grown vineyards: Quinta de Santa Teresa, Casa do Arrabalde and Quinta dos Espinhosos, with an important heritage of indigenous vines.

Their goal is to produce good and sincere wines, using modern and sustainable viticultural techniques as well as working exclusively with their own estate fruit. The grape selection includes: Avesso, Arinto, Malvasia Fina, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Vinho Verde For Everyday

I really enjoyed the drinkability of everything I tasted from the portfolio with a great range of entry level and more complex wines to enjoy with food. I think Vinho Verde is made to be enjoyed young and fresh with friends at an aperitivo, for lunch or just on its own after a long day of work. The chalky minerality and vibrant acidity of Vinho Verde make it so easy to drink and very hard to resist !

Some of the high-end cuvées aged in oak barrels have always surprised me with their gorgeous velvety texture, smoky mouthfeel and long mineral finish. Don’t be fooled, some Vinho Verdes can age very well, but I find it so hard to keep them in the cellar. I might have to try some older vintages to convinced myself !

That being said, enjoy Vinho Verde at all time and make sure you have a couple extra bottles ready for your next wine sipping session!
